Bridges, Overpasses, Tunnels
Moscow's districts are becoming more accessible to residents thanks to bridges, tunnels, and overpasses, significantly reducing travel time across the city.
The State Budgetary Institution "Gormost" handles the repair and operation of bridges in Moscow.
Moscow has 452 bridges of various designs: arch, cable-stayed, suspension, beam, and combined.
"Gormost" also manages various transport facilities: bridge and tunnel structures, embankments, transport tunnels, and interchanges.
Bridges and tunnels are not only architectural treasures (like the historic Krymsky Bridge) but also complex technical structures where vehicles move, pedestrians walk, ships pass beneath, and utilities run.
In 2021, the Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge reopened after major repairs. The bridge had to be dismantled and reassembled using new parts and elements. Complex work took 14 months without closing traffic for vehicles and pedestrians. This was the first major repair since the bridge was built in 1938.
Learn more about bridges, tunnels, and overpasses and how they are maintained on the video screen.
Each bridge, tunnel, and overpass has an asphalt surface. Moscow has about 42 million square meters of hard surfaces—roads, sidewalks, pedestrian pathways, and courtyard areas. Moscow has about 120 mln square meters of roads and pedestrian pathways. Of these, 42 million square meters are administered by State Budgetary Institution "Avtomobilnye Dorogi"
We'll learn how road surfaces are constructed in the next exhibition section.
